About
Woonona Shamrocks Rugby Club is the heart of rugby in the northern suburbs of Wollongong, fielding competitive 1st and 2nd Grade teams in the Illawarra District Rugby Union competition.
Based at Ocean Park, the club prides itself on its passionate community spirit, volunteer ethos, and commitment to grassroots rugby. Known for their distinctive green and white colours and their fierce but fair playing style, the Shamrocks offer a welcoming environment for players, supporters, and families. The club maintains a strong focus on player development while honouring the traditions and camaraderie that have defined Shamrocks rugby for over five decades.
Our History
We’re a pack of Shamrocks
Founded in 1970 through the merger of Shamrocks RUFC and Woonona Surf RUFC, the Woonona Shamrocks have grown from humble beginnings into a respected force in Illawarra rugby. Initially struggling to field enough players, the club developed a fighting spirit and “never forfeit” attitude that remains part of its DNA today.
The Shamrocks have collected numerous premierships across all grades, including seven 1st Grade titles and nine Club Championships. After playing at Nicholson Park for 34 years, the club relocated to Ocean Park in 2003, constructing our own clubhouse through volunteer labour and community fundraising.
Throughout their history, the Shamrocks have remained true to our community focus and working-class roots, embodied in our famous club song “We’re a Pack of Shamrocks” embodying their united spirit.

Community
The Shamrocks are more than just a rugby club—we’re a family that spans generations, with many current players being second or third-generation Shamrocks. At the core of this community are dedicated volunteers who maintain the grounds, run the canteen, and support the teams week after week.
The legendary “Thursday Crew”: a large group of retired players and supporters who meet weekly to prepare Ocean Park for match days while preserving club traditions and stories. Even in the difficult post-Covid sporting environment the Club continues to place tremendous importance on both it;s junior development program,as well as encouraging young players into the senior grades. The Club recognises that these young players represent both the future of Shamrocks and the lifeblood of rugby in the northern Illawarra. Through dedicated coaching and mentorship, these young players learn not just rugby skills but also the unique Shamrock values and spirit that have defined the club for decades. The Club’s Pathways Program is being built to guide young players into the senior grades to help ensure the club’s distinctive culture continues to thrive with each new generation.
Beyond rugby, Shamrocks actively support local causes, including the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea, the Red Shield Appeal, the Dexter Porter Cup Blood Donations annual event and supporting our local Community Centre with a Food Collection Drive each year.
