Shamrocks 2nd Grade Deliver Dominant Performance in Comprehensive Away Victory Against Tech/Tahs.
Shamrocks 38 – Home Team 0
Woonoona Shamrocks produced a masterful display of rugby away from home, securing a commanding 38-0 shutout victory that showcased their attacking prowess and defensive discipline. This was a game where all the glory was well deserved by the backs – but the outcome was built on a forward pack who demonstrated a willingness to grind away and utilise their range of skills in both attack and defence.
The match was overshadowed early by a serious injury to TECH/TAHS player, Inel Arnautovic, with just 10 minutes into the game. This incident required an Ambulance, consequently, the remainder of the first half was spent waiting for para-medical support. As there was no injury time in Second Grade (even though this was the only game on the day – go figure!) the game restarted as the beginning of a second half extended by 5 minutes to make a 40-minute half. That 40 minutes provided this second-grade team with the ability to showcase just how well-drilled a team they are. So many opportunities were made available for the backs to demonstrate their willingness to pass and attack with the ball. Shamrocks Rugby Club wishes Inel a speedy recovery.
Thomas Connell emerged as the star of the show with a superb hat-trick that demonstrated his finishing ability and positional awareness. His three tries came at crucial moments throughout the match and provided the backbone of Shamrocks’ dominant victory. Each score showcased different aspects of his game, from powerful close-range finishes to pace on the outside.
Ben Ridgway’s 18 points was significant, successfully converting four of the six tries to maintain his reputation as one of the most reliable kickers in the competition.
Ashton Hook’s ability to provide such accurate halfback passes got the backline into attack mode. Ben Ridgway had the opposition befuddled with his attack and Ben’s ability to sniff out opportunities to make a break rewarded him with his single try for the day. Ben’s astute passes ensured his Centres in Harry Devine and Corey Chinnock-Clark had the opportunity to make so many decisive breaks. Consequently, the two wingers had a field day. Thomas Cornnell scored a hat trick and Hagen Degarnham chalked up his fourth try of the season and when Riley Spajic replaced Hagen the attack continued. The sixth and final try of the day was so well deserved. Will Ridgway’s willingness to get stuck in, tackle everything and hunt out the ball resulted in his contribution to the day’s tally. The backs’ play was rounded out by Fullback Simon Bayley’s defense and attacking support play.
The forward pack had all the guts without the glory. This pack is willing to match it with the much bigger teams and fight for possession all day. Their set play was strong and their ability to pounce on wayward ball enabled quick turnaround and allowed the backs to capatilise and make many incisive raids into opposition territory.
The match was not without its disciplinary issues, with the opposition player, Adam Sharman receiving a yellow card for intentional infringement. However, Shamrocks showed excellent game management to take advantage of that numerical advantage.
Defensively, Shamrocks were outstanding throughout the contest, shutting out the home team completely to record their first clean sheet of the season. The defensive line remained disciplined and organised, making crucial tackles and turnovers at key moments to prevent any scoring opportunities.
This comprehensive away victory represents a significant milestone for Shamrocks, demonstrating their ability to perform under pressure and deliver complete performances when it matters most.
The shutout victory will give the coaching staff tremendous confidence in the squad’s defensive capabilities, while the attacking display showcased the depth and quality available throughout the team. The performance bodes well for the challenges that lie ahead in the season.
Thomas Connell’s hat-trick performance will be remembered as one of the individual highlights of the campaign, while Ben Ridgway’s continued excellence with both boot and ball in hand demonstrates his value to the team’s success.
This dominant display serves as a statement of intent from Shamrocks, showing they possess the quality and determination to compete with anyone in the competition. The team can take enormous pride in a victory that exemplified everything positive about their approach to the game.
