Tech Tahs match report 20 July
Saturday started with a viscous westerly wind and proceeded to get worse. I thought that the games were going to be played entirely on the Eastern side of Ocean Park, and so it was.
Second grade had the job of showing us that they could not only dominate possession and territory BUT also turn that into points, and they did that in spades. Opening with a try a few minutes into the game. Kicking for goal was never going to be easy in the wind and it wasn’t. Shamies scored most of their points in the first half whilst running south in a NW wind. A good score given how few points could be scored off the boot.
Final score 29 to nil to Shamies.
First grade had the job of continuing their good structure and discipline from last weeks game against Vikings. Again, they delivered in spades, the conditions were awful, bitterly cold and windy. Shamies scored a couple of really nicely worked tries under the posts, early on, and converted plus a nice run-away try under the post. Going into half time, 21 to nil to Shamies. The second half was more of the same with Shamrocks maintaining their discipline, particularly in their defensive structures. It was the defensive discipline that was the key in the windy conditions. The conversions dried up the second half of the game, on one occasion the shot was on target and then took a complete 90 degree turn, nearly ending up in the Pacific Ocean. Every body got into the club house afterwards, Tech Tahs stayed back in numbers, the beer, roast potato and mince dinner thawed everybody out.
Final score 39 to nil to Shamies.
